about ISO20000

ISO20000, or ISO/IEC20000 to give its full title, will be the International Standard for IT Service Management. This was taken from the British Standard, BS15000, with minor but not significant changes primarily to correct errors and inconsistencies. ISO20000 was published late in 2005.

There is an appetite for an International Standard. BS15000 has become an accepted standard in many countries since certification became available in 2003. Companies currently accredited to BS15000 are not only in Great Britain but also in India, Germany, Spain, Portugal and the United States. In addition, the British Standard has been adopted unchanged as a national standard in Australia, Korea, South Africa and Hungary.

Because ISO20000 is so similar to BS15000, existing preparation activities for BS15000 are equally valid for ISO20000. Decisions are still being made on what happens when ISO20000 is published but it is likely that companies already holding BS15000 certification will be able to say that they have achieved ISO20000. Organizations currently in pursuit of BS15000 certification should not hesitate as they will likely be among the first to hold the new ISO20000 certification.
